The Blu Room
1011 Glenmore Trail SW Suite 212, Calgary
Located inside the Rockyview Health Centre Building #1 on the 2nd floor.
There is an alternative to a good relaxing day that does not involve leaving Calgary or even someone touching you. The benefits are felt rapidly and leave you in a relaxed buzz for the rest of the day. There are plenty of reasons why people decide to try it out: pain, depression—especially during the wintertime when our sunny days are shorter—, helping in the healing process and more as you will see.
This is the result of UVB exposure and relaxing atmosphere of the octagonal blue-lit mirrored room while listening to music of a specific frequency. Now it sounds like a lot is going on here. I will break it down for you after I tell you all about what it’s like to step inside the Blu Room.
Entering the room already feels like you are not in the Calgary realm anymore, but it doesn’t feel stuffy because mirrors reflecting mirrors give you a sense of infinite space. It’s certainly amazing to behold. The room’s layout creates a faraday cage, literally shielding you from the rest of the world, where you won’t be getting any ACDC and EMF inside.
During your time there, you are given goggles or an eye mask—the kind you sleep with—to protect your eyes during the short exposure to UVB. As amazing as the mirrored walls all, you’ll likely want to relax with your eyes closed anyway.
You are asked to remove metal accessories and put them in a box below the lounging space, no one but you will have access to them. It’s not mandatory but recommended. You are given some options to enhance your comfort. Personally, I have a bad back and laying down sometimes brings me discomfort, so I used their foam roller to stretch my back a little before settling onto the pad.
The session is only 20 minutes long, so you don’t risk being bored. I always try to focus on issues I have and surely, in that space, I’m finding that my focus is heightened and I’m progressing in my personal development. I choose to focus on bad habits and thought patterns while I’m there as well as help me deal with pain and help me restore some of my energy. I’m battling a disease and I’m putting all chances on my side. The lack of energy is definitely something I’ve been struggling with for many years.
I always feel good afterwards and that’s what’s keeping me coming. It’s special me-time that doesn’t break the bank, nor need a lot of time off to enjoy. I feel the effects quickly and they last. Bonus, it’s next to the Chinook mall area, so I have plenty of places to go afterwards if I’m hungry or need to go shopping. I also like to just drive to a quiet café and write. One of the interesting benefits of the Blu Room is leaving with heightened focus, feeling more relaxed, it helps bridge the link to creative outputs. My body is and my mind both enter a relaxed state.
Here is what’s going on inside the room.
Each of the 8 walls of the room features lamps releasing safely regulated UVB light spectrum to boost your absorption of vitamin D. Research links Vitamin D to improve cases of inflammation-related issues such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. One such scientific paper on the subject can be read here. Starting at 3 minutes, and made to be increased slowly over subsequent visits, the actual time of exposure to UVB light is very limited. It’s the same UVB light spectrum as from the sun which allows your body to produce vitamin D naturally.
While the Blu Room cannot claim that they can improve on inflammation issues, it will certainly help increase your vitamin D serum levels. How vitamin D helps is by improving the microbial composition of the gut. And I’ve heard many times that good health starts in the gut.
The room has a specific octagonal shape that was built using Nikola Tesla’s mathematical rules and is made of steel. Even the mirrors. That is why Electromagnetic influences cannot go through.
For those of you who are into inner working and connecting with yourself, I’ve found it’s a great isolated period to do so.
The room is bathed in blue light and immersing us into effective light therapy, not to be confused with chromotherapy. However, the usage specifically of the colour blue plays partly into the field of chromotherapy. The colour blue triggers the brain to start the healing process, hence why it’s a colour you’ll see in hospitals. Its appeasing influence lowers blood pressure, conducive to a calm state of being.
One effect of blue light, which we’ve heard often enough by now, it that it suppresses melatonin in the body, making us more alert. This is interesting as, while I feel relaxed, I do feel sharper, but as I was told by the owner, Mr. Hobbs, it is simply because our mind is in a relaxed state that it can focus more easily. This is a no-brainer that when we are overwhelmed and stressed, we can’t concentrate very well.
The last component of the room experience would be the music. You are permitted to bring your own, but by default, the Blu Room provides music with frequencies ranging from 4.17 Hz to 4.96 Hz. If you don’t know what binaural beats are, they are frequencies that our bodies respond to played at slightly different frequencies in each ear, as I understand it from this article, the difference is what defines the beat. Here’s a sample of 4.9Hz binaural beats. If you can’t hear it, it’s because the bass frequency is so low, you won’t hear it on most laptops as you need decent speakers or headphones to hear it. Some of there audio clips have music in it, some are just the beats. Even university students use binaural beats frequencies to help achieve better focus.
“The Blu Room brings your mind to stasis. When you experience tranquility and peace, your mind has a wellbeing that is transmitted to your body. When you consistently experience a sense of wellbeing over time, it affects the body like sunlight upon a flower in the morning. The buds start to open up.
Any issue or condition that you walk in with will benefit from the mental rejuvenation you experience coming out of your Blu Room session. The Blu Room doesn’t treat physical conditions, it supports your mind. Improvements in physical health are a side effect of the mind getting well.
Immerse yourself in the tranquility of your deeper mind in order to dilute the memories of past issues and expedite your mental wellbeing. A healthy mind brings about a healthy body.” - Blu Room
There are no known negative side-effects. The Blu Room is safe, but as there are a few medications recommending to stay out of the sun, such as for Lupus, it is recommended to consult with your doctor first. However, from what I have heard, it doesn’t mean you’re going to get a reaction, still, the Blu Room and I cannot make such claims as to guarantee there will never be a reaction. However, as discussed with one of the owners, Hunter Hobbs, one solution they have been using is to supercharge the room for about 6 minutes, then lead the person in without the UVB lamps on, while leaving the blue light and music on. This seems to work well for them while still reaping benefits.
There are quite some research and some still ongoing on the benefits of the Blu Room. Several articles appearing in military magazines offer the Blu Room as an alternative to medicine. Researchers in the United-States have been working with PTSD-afflicted veterans with life-changing results.
A Blu Room book has been released which relates a lot of the research done on light, frequency and sound.
There are about 40 Blu Rooms around the world now and this location has been open since 2017. While it is not well known in the West of Canada, its popularity is booming in the eastern provinces of Quebec and Ontario with many feeling the benefits right away or over time. Everyone’s experience is unique.
Calgary’s Blu Room owners have plans to open a Blu Room in Edmonton in the future.

Before finishing I thought I could add a little Q&A:
1) Q. I understand that sessions are never happening later than 7 pm at the latest (Tuesdays). Will this impair my ability to sleep at night.
A. No, in fact, some clients with insomnia have reported sleeping better at night.
2) Q. Is it safe for kids, what is the minimum age recommended?
A. If the child is under 12, it will need to be accompanied by an adult. Otherwise, if the child is older and able to remain inside the room by themselves, they can have their own private session.
3) Q. What is the maximum time limit of UVB exposure?
A. A session lasts 20 minutes, but the UVB exposure time is topped at 9 minutes.
4) Q. Why should I remove metal accessories during the session.
A. Because metal carries energies and while not putting you at risk of any kind, you may want to remove them to get a better experience. This is most likely to matter to you if you believe in the spiritual kind of energies ad their relations to objects.
5) Q. How often do you recommend coming to the Blu Room?
A. Complementary to healing. Recommend coming 2-3 times a week to see if you feel a difference and tailor the frequency to your needs.
6) Q. Is the Blu Room going to cure me?
A. The Blu Room is complementary to healing. Any serious issues need to be followed by a doctor.
